Party urges Zambians to reject tribalism, hatred and divisions as country marks 62 years of independence

By Francis Maingaila ♥️

Lusaka, Zambia24 — October 25, 2026 — The National Democratic Congress (NDC), a partner in the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) Alliance Government, has called on Zambians to reject tribalism, hatred and divisions and remain united as the country celebrates 62 years of independence.

NDC Secretary General Kennedy Siyanda said in an Independence Day statement issued on October 24, 2026, that the anniversary should serve as an opportunity for citizens to renew their commitment to peace, unity and the development of a prosperous and corruption-free Zambia.

Mr Siyanda said the party joined Zambians at home and abroad in commemorating the country’s independence, while paying tribute to the men and women who sacrificed their lives and resources to end British colonial rule.

He said the sacrifices, courage and vision of the country’s founding freedom fighters, led by Zambia’s first Republican President, the late Dr Kenneth David Kaunda, had secured the freedom Zambians enjoy today.

Mr Siyanda said the contributions of the liberation heroes and heroines should continue to inspire citizens to protect the country’s independence and uphold the values on which the nation was founded.

He also commended President Hakainde Hichilema for consistently urging citizens across the country’s 10 provinces to uphold patriotism, hard work and peace.

Mr Siyanda said the NDC supported the President’s call for Zambians to reject hatred, tribalism and other forms of division that could undermine national unity.

He urged citizens to remain committed to the national motto, One Zambia, One Nation, saying unity remained essential to building a peaceful and prosperous country.

Mr Siyanda further appealed to opposition political parties, sections of civil society and the Church to put aside their differences and embrace peace and national unity.

He said the Independence Day commemoration should go beyond celebrations and provide an opportunity for reflection on the country’s progress and the responsibilities citizens share in shaping its future.

Mr Siyanda said Zambians should use the anniversary to renew their commitment to building a country where peace, unity, prosperity and accountability were upheld for the benefit of all citizens.

He wished Zambians at home and abroad a happy 62nd Independence Anniversary and reiterated the party’s call for national unity under the motto, One Zambia, One Nation
