The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and ZEP-RE (PTA Reinsurance Company) have agreed to strengthen professional and institutional capacity in trade, insurance, reinsurance and risk management as Africa seeks to deepen cross-border commerce and investment.

This is according to a statement issued on Wednesday.

The three-year partnership will bring together Afreximbank Academy (AFRACAD) and ZEP-RE Academy to develop professional training, research and knowledge programmes aimed at equipping institutions and market participants with skills to manage increasingly complex trade and investment risks.

The statement said the agreement builds on a broader commercial partnership between the two institutions, including the Trans-Africa Bond Alliance (TABA), which has supported about $185 million in bonds since beginning operations in June 2025 and $280 million in the first quarter of 2026, with risks originating from 24 cedents across five countries.

The MoU was signed at ZEP-RE’s offices in Nairobi by Stephen Tio Kauma, Afreximbank’s Group Managing Director for Human Resources, and Jephita Gwatipedza, ZEP-RE’s Group Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer.

“Africa’s ability to expand trade and investment depends on more than financial resources and infrastructure. It also depends on knowledge, skills and institutional capacity across our markets,” Kauma said.

He said the partnership would combine Afreximbank’s expertise in trade and trade finance with ZEP-RE’s experience in insurance, reinsurance and risk management.

Under the agreement, the two institutions will develop digital learning content, including e-learning courses, toolkits and African case studies, through a joint content development approach.

The programmes will be delivered through AFRACAD’s digital learning platform and/or ZEP-RE Academy’s learning management system, allowing the institutions to extend access to specialised training across African markets.

The partnership will also provide professional and executive development programmes covering areas such as risk and reinsurance, trade guarantees, trade facilitation, financial infrastructure and market development.

The MoU will initially run for three years and may be renewed by mutual agreement.
