Transparency International Zambia report on mitigating governance risks associated with Chinese mining in Zambia has highlighted the country’s failure to maximize the benefits from the mining sector, despite the industry generating significant economic value.

The report states that much of the value generated is externalized and does not sufficiently benefit local communities.

According to the report Chinese mining companies also have a poor record of managing environmental pollution and ensuring adequate worker safety.

The report further notes challenges surrounding land acquisition, with most mining companies allegedly acquiring customary land through unclear processes, thereby placing local communities at risk of losing their land and livelihoods
