According to the Securities and Exchange Commission SEC Q2 report, the equity market is reported to have declined as the Lusaka Securities Exchange All Share Index (LASI) for Q2 2026 dropped by 5.51% to close at 25,784.88 points, which is a decrease from 27,289.81 points, which was recorded at the end of Q1 2026.

The report reveals that the drop was mainly due to a price decline on the exchange from 12 out of 23 companies listed on LuSE. Further, market capitalization in companies such as Shoprite declined from K341.87 billion to K334.12 billion, largely due to price declines in 12 of the 23 listed equities, including key heavyweights such as ZCCM-IH, CEC, and Chilanga Cement.

However, despite the overall decline, some counters recorded gains, with ZAFFICO recording the strongest quarterly price increase, while Airtel Networks Zambia Plc maintained its valuation resilience and reached the milestone of a billion-dollar market capitalization during the quarter.

Earlier, the Zambian Business Times (ZBT) reported on the continued market turnover drop, which was recorded during the election period for consecutive weeks.

According to an interview conducted with an unnamed broker who attributed low performance on the exchange mainly due to investors have uncertainty of the elections.

“Considering the election period we are in, most investors are turning to be a bit skeptical about investing because they are not sure of what their outcomes will be, and that is affecting the market,” said the broker.

The source said that after elections the Lusaka exchange is expected to see positive performance and increased market turnover. A check by the Zambia Business Times-ZBT on LuSE shows that some companies listed on the exchange, such as Chilanga Cement, ZCCM-IH, BATA, and many others, have started announcing their interim financials for the first half of 2026 and declaring dividends.

Earlier, Zambian Business Times-ZBT reported on the continuous decrease in the Lusaka Securities Exchange ALL Share Index due to sensitivity in the market from investors considering that it was an election period.

According to a source whose name remains withheld, told Zambian Business Times-ZBT, the Lusaka Stock Exchange All Share Index (LASI) represents the total turnover for all the companies listed on the exchange, and performance is based on how listed companies perform.

She told Zambian Business Times (ZBT) that companies listed on the Lusaka Securities Exchange (LSE) overall market turnover is affected by stocks that record a decrease in terms of share prices.

“The Lusaka Stock Exchange Index is a representation of the total performance of all the listed companies on the exchange, and basically there are some specific companies that negatively affect its performance, especially when the share price falls drastically.”

The source added that an increase in companies losing in terms of share price triggers a decrease in market turnover and affects the Lusaka Stock Exchange All Share Index (LASI).

“If companies that have a bigger impact on the LASI outcomes tend to continue to record a decrease in share price, the market turnover will continue to reduce and vice versa if the share price gains.”
