ECZ Denies Electoral Malpractice Claims in Lima Petition

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has denied allegations of electoral illegal practices, undue influence, threats, intimidation and violence raised in a petition challenging the election of NRPUP’s Lima Constituency Member of Parliament, Kelvin Kaunda.

Mr. Mukupa has petitioned the Lusaka High Court seeking to nullify Mr. Kaunda’s election as Member of Parliament for Lima Constituency following the August 13, 2026 general election.

Mr. Kaunda won the seat after garnering 22,760 votes, while Mr. Mukupa polled 8,041 votes.

In its answer filed before the High Court, the ECZ says the allegations concerning the conduct of the poll are within the sole knowledge of the petitioner, Lee Kabaso Mukupa.

The Commission has also told the court that it did not receive any complaint from Mr. Mukupa or his agent concerning the alleged irregularities, nor did it receive a letter of objection regarding the electoral process.

The ECZ has further admitted that the Lima Constituency parliamentary election was held on August 13, 2026, during the general elections, and that the Returning Officer declared Kelvin Kaunda duly elected Member of Parliament on August 15.

It has, however, denied all other allegations in the petition unless expressly admitted.
