Government will next month launch the National Youth Internship Programme to provide young people with workplace experience, mentorship and skills development.
Youth, Sport and Arts Permanent Secretary KANGWA CHILESHE says the programme will address youth unemployment and improve employability.
Mr. CHILESHE says this follows President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’s directive for Government institutions to create opportunities for young people.
He says the initiative builds on the Internship, Volunteer, Apprenticeship and Graduate Programme,-IVAG- which placed 2,000 young people in Government institutions, the United Nations and the private sector, with 360 later securing permanent employment.

Following Cabinet Office Circular Minute Number 19 of 2026, Government institutions have been directed to provide internship placements.
The rollout begins on 1st October, 2026, with the advertisement of opportunities, selection and placement of eligible interns.
He says Interns will be assigned meaningful responsibilities in offices up to Principal level.
Meanwhile Permanent Secretary for Special duties at Cabinet Office WISDOM BWALYA says challenges surrounding the payment of stipends under the youth internship programme have been addressed.
Mr. BWALYA says the current circular is explicit that all interns will receive payments, which will help meet transport and other basic costs.
